BLOOMINGTON -- It’s the coldest day of the year. The temperature dropped to 5 degrees by about 5 a.m., said Dan Smith, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, and the mercury isn’t expected to top 12 degrees the rest of the day.

With northwest winds of 15 to 20 mph, the wind chill reading will range from 5 degrees to 15 degrees below zero.

Streets and roads that became ice-covered overnight haven’t caused any serious accidents in Central Illinois, according to police and other authorities. Mostly, state troopers were responding to vehicles sliding into ditches.

The weather service is predicting from 2 to 4 inches of snow Tuesday in much of Central Illinois.
