Tutorial: Quick & Easy Crocheted Sweater

Fits 3-6 mos

As part of my knitting/crochet group's community service, we create baby sweaters for the local Crisis Pregnancy Center. I wanted to create something quick and easy, so I came up with this easy pattern. I'm sure there are similiar patterns available, but I wrote this down as I went along so if one exists like it, I'm not aware of it.

With that being said, I'm offering this free pattern for personal use and may be shared and distributed so long as it remains fully intact including this copyright notice, and no profit is made from its distribution or use.

Materials:
2 skeins of 4-ply yarn
H crochet hook (for sweater ties)
N crochet hook (for sweater)

Directions:
With two strands of yarn, using the N hook, chain 28 stitches. Use the 2 strands of yarn throughout EXCEPT for the neck ties.

ROW 1: Single crochet (SC) in 2nd chain stitch from hook, and then in the next 3 chain stitches. SC 3 times in the next chain stitch (corner made).
SC in the next 4 chain stitches. SC 3 times in the next chain stitch (corner made).
SC in the next 8 chain stitches. SC 3 times in the next chain stitch (corner made).
SC in the next 4 chain stitches. SC 3 times in the next chain stitch (corner made).
SC in the next 4 chain stitches. Turn.

ROW 2: Chain 2, and * double crochet (DC) in each stitch until you reach the corner. SC 3 times in the center of the corner. Continue double crocheting until you reach the next corner. And so on. *
Repeat from * to * until you reach the last corner. Complete the corner as you’ve done previously, and then DC to the end. Turn.

ROW 3: Repeat row 2 one more time.

ROW 4: Chain 1, and SC to the first corner. SC in the center of the corner, and then chain 5 stitches. SC in the center of the next corner, and across to the center of the next corner. Chain 5 stitches, and then SC in the center of the next corner. SC to the end. Turn.

ROW 5: Chain 1, and (SC) in each stitch including the two underarm 5 stitches you just made in the previous row, until you reach the end. Turn.

ROWS 6-11: Chain 2, and DC in each stitch to the end. Turn.

ROW 12: Chain 1, and SC in each stitch to the end. Cut yarn, secure, and weave into the sweater.

Sleeves
ROW 1: With the center of the underarm bottom facing you, attach two strands of yarn with a slip stitch through a chain space. Chain 1, SC in same stitch as joining. SC in each stitch around. I got 18 when I made my sample. Join in the top of the first stitch with a slip stitch.

ROW 2: Chain 2, DC in each stitch around. Join in the top of the beginning stitch with a slip stitch.

ROWS 3-6: Repeat row 2.

ROW 7: Chain 1, SC around. Join in the top of the first stitch with a slip stitch. Cut yarn, secure, and weave into the sleeve. Repeat for second sleeve.

Neck Ties
With H hook and a single strand of yarn, chain 30 stitches. Turn.
SC in 2nd stitch from hook and across until you reach the end. When you reach the end, SC in the first chain stitch on the sweater neck, and in each stitch across (approx. 28). When you reach the end, chain 30 stitches, turn, and SC in 2nd stitch from hook and in each across to sweater. Cut yarn, secure/tie it off, and weave it into the neck.

If you find any problems with this pattern, please let me know and I’ll make adjustments. Thanks!

I would love to try your baby sweater for charity, but I need a visual to know if I'm on the right path. Do you have a pic you can post? It would be very much appreciated. Have a great day!
